Student Development Corps

Student Development Corps is ASU’s signature program for engaging international development organizations with innovative, research-based solutions provided by its best students and faculty. The program’s proven model offers award-winning project design and implementation customized to client needs. Through Student Development Corps, ASU tackles unique client challenges across multiple fields, utilizing specialized expertise in technology development, data analysis, survey design and execution, and more. ASU guarantees client satisfaction through oversight by expert faculty and a concierge process that facilitates smooth contracting and solutions development.

Student Development Corps helps clients to capture cost share and access cost-effective, short-term technical assistance, and creates a pipeline for recruiting skilled workers. Current and former clients of Student Development Corps include USAID and other government agencies, major international development implementers, and international and local NGOs and civil society organizations.

Featured Student Development Corps projects:


Shipshape

One of two winners out of more than 500 USAID/Gates Foundation Grand Challenge submissions, Shipshape is an engaging mobile education game for health care workers that teaches basic supply chain skills such as inventory management, stocking, forecasting, ordering and basic formulas. Shipshape empowers health care workers to make more effective decisions to improve health supply chains. ASU is partnering with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology in Ghana to develop the app for initial release in Ghana, with plans to expand to Nigeria, Kenya and other developing countries in the future. Upon final release, Shipshape will be free to download and will require no internet connection to play.


TransIT and ePOD

Developed by ASU students for Chemonics, TransIT is an end-to-end cloud database for health supply chains that provides warehouses, third-party logistics companies, and others within the supply chain with a central location to store important data. The platform standardizes the tracking and analysis of critical information on shipments, drivers, customers, items, proof of delivery, images, and more, and provides reports to improve awareness of current supply chain conditions and facilitate better planning. ePOD (Electronic Proof of Delivery) is a mobile application that feeds information to the TransIT database platform. ePOD provides solutions for last mile delivery, enabling users to use mobile devices for obtaining signatures, take and submit photos, and mark items in real time to provide accurate status of deliveries. TransIT and ePOD are already in use in Cameroon, Angola and Mozambique, with plans for rolling out to more countries in the future.


Nike Soy Bean Factory

With support from USAID and Winrock, masters level students from ASU’s Thunderbird School of Global Management provided business consulting solutions for the Nike Soy Bean Factory in Myanmar. During the semester-long project, Thunderbird students spent several weeks in Myanmar to develop a comprehensive strategy for improving factory safety, implementing sanitization standards for workers, improving operational procedures, and integrating quality assurance protocols to enable the factory to expand its business globally. The project was run out of the Thunderbird Emerging Markets Lab, which advances innovative consulting solutions for multinational and local companies, government agencies, universities and NGOs around the world.


SolarSPELL

SolarSPELL (Solar Powered Educational Learning Library) is a ruggedized, portable solar-powered digital library designed to be run off-line to provide education solutions and low resource settings. Originally designed for Peace Corps volunteers in the South Pacific, SolarSPELL simulates an online experience by enabling learners to use their devices to connect to library content through a Wi-Fi hotspot. ASU students worked with the SolarSPELL team to bring down manufacturing cost in half, from $130 to $65 to assemble each unit, which will allow scaling up production for use in additional projects in countries throughout the world.
