Solutions Labs for Global Impact

In collaboration with leading international development partners, ASU is driving new solutions to the intractable problems facing the development community and redefining the practice of international development. ASU Solutions Labs leverage the knowledge, skills, and resources of the university and its development partners for specialized approaches to investigating, testing, implementing and scaling innovations to improve project performance and outcomes.

Our three-phase process:

  • Defines stakeholder needs and the challenges they face.
  • Designs and tests solutions to respond to challenges.
  • Scales or commercializes innovations with the help of strategic partners.

Through this approach, ASU is advancing new models for project success that meet the business needs of development implementers and anticipate emerging USAID guidelines and practices, such as Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting. The ASU Solutions Labs will not only improve outcomes for developing nations, but also make a dramatic impact on the effectiveness of international development interventions.

ASU Solutions Labs currently comprise three focus areas:

  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: Through the Global Impact Collaboratory, ASU is innovating Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) for low-resource settings. The focus is using new tools from the social sciences to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of how international development efforts are reviewed. The Global Impact Collaboratory designs and validates radical innovations in MEL that allow implementers to track community perspectives on project goals and impacts of activities in real time, meeting scientific standards. As part of the collaboratory, ASU’s Center for Global Health successfully implemented these new approaches in the USAID-funded Coastal City Adaptation Project in Mozambique and Justice Sector Strengthening Program in Haiti.
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Innovation: The Frontier Economies Logistics Lab (FELL) leverages the expertise of the Supply Chain Management Program at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business—currently ranked No. 3 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. FELL responds to the unique challenges of emerging markets with innovative solutions for cost-effective delivery of goods and services. It will draw together public and private organizations as members of the lab to collaboratively implement and validate solutions and drive continuous improvement in the supply chains of emerging markets.
  • Conservation: The Conservation Solutions Lab (CSL) brings multidisciplinary expertise and evidence-based methods to designing, implementing, and measuring community engagement approaches to conservation. An innovative partnership between ASU’s Center for Biodiversity and Outcomes and Chemonics, CSL represents a transformational approach to strengthening the evidence base for supporting community-based conservation measures to ensure effective, equitable outcomes.

ASU International Development is actively working with development partners to identify additional topics for Solutions Labs.
